Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz

The indelible truth about 2019 The Caley is that it is extraordinarily sleek and polished with a refined spine of freshness and control that captures the senses. The characteristics that make The Caley the most astounding of all Cabernet/Shiraz blends are not simply the parcels, the grapes and the blend but the immense skill in chaperoning these qualities drawn from far-flung paddocks and via extremely careful husbandry into the bottle.

Tasting Note Very deep and dense red in colour. Inviting and expressive florals of cassis, rose petals, iodine, violets and cedary tones. This truly epitomises the distinct character of Coonawarra and the unique essence of The Caley. Shiraz fruit merges with Cabernet Sauvignon delivering a long and seamless palate. Full in depth with a prominent chalky, mineral, tannin profile.
Terroir The Ming D block in the Yalumba Coonawarra vineyard provides the 75% Cabernet Sauvignon of this blend. This 2.7 ha plot was planted in 1992 with two clones of Cabernet Sauvignon selected for structure and depth of flavour. The Caley’s 25% Shiraz component was sourced from two Barossa blocks. The first block is the Crown Village, Schrapel old shiraz block. located along the Tanunda foothills near Krondorf about 4 km south of the Tanunda township. The second from the Horseshoe Vineyard on the southern side of the Yalumba winery in Eden Valley. Planted by Helen Hill-Smith in 1971, this block follows the contours around the Fred Caley Smith Hut.
Treatment Matured for 19 months in 24% new French Barriques, balance in 1 year and older French Barriques.

Accolades

A sublime example of the quintessential Australian red blend
Intense and rich ruby core with a deep purple rim. Lifted nose, shining with blueberry and blackberry fruits, hints of cigar and cedar wood as well. A pitch perfect palate that shows elegance yet power. Supple forest berries meld with fine graphite, tobacco leaf and cigar box savouries, all bound by a powerful weave of the finest grained tannins. It flows and drives with purpose and finesse to an almost never-ending finish. A sublime example of the quintessential Australian red blend of cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.

This is an elegant and understated icon
A blend of old-vine fruit from both Coonawarra and Barossa, this is an elegant and understated icon bottling that's still very young. Plump berries are at the core, with leafy Cab-like edges, leather, gentle peppery spice and a slight smoky nuance. Tannins are muscular yet pliable, making room for the supple fruit, but overwhelming by the finish, indicating the need for more time in bottle. Drink 2027–2049.

A big, formidable yet charming wine
Made only in high quality vintages, this is the seventh release of The Caley, maintaining its mix of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra with 25% Shiraz from Eden Valley. Matured for 19 months in 24% new French barriques, with the rest in older French oak barrels, it’s an opulent, rich red symphony of big blackberry and plum flavours, wrapped in a seamless palate that strikes gloriously harmonious notes. The result is a big, formidable yet charming wine in ideal balance, completed by a crisp mineral finish. It will be fascinating to see how this develops after a decade in the cellar.

A high quality vintage destined for a great cellaring future
Deep crimson. Intense black cherry, cassis, dark chocolate, roasted chestnut aromas. Inky deep, voluminous and chocolaty with abundant dark cherry, cassis flavours, fine dense velvety tannins and well-integrated roasted chestnut, marzipan notes. Builds chocolaty firm at the finish with ample dark berry fruits. Elemental and powerfully structured wine with the density, volume and torque for long term aging. Keep for a while to allow the elements to fold. A high quality vintage destined for a great cellaring future. 75% Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Barossa Shiraz. 19 months maturation in 24% new and seasoned French Barriques.

Top Rated: Cabernet and Blends
The Caley from Yalumba has quickly established itself as one of the benchmark wines in the 'Great Australian Blend' category. An elegant representation of how well Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon and Barossa shiraz (at 77/33 per cent split) can work together in the right hands. There is a black-fruited intensity to its form, fine spice and cedar tones suffusing slowly through the wine with tobacco, dried herbs, pressed flowers, pencil shavings, cinnamon and roast beef. Texturally, it's a stunning wine: super pure black fruits, a silken flow, fine, powdery tannin, lacy acidity and a graceful, extended retreat from the mouth with lingering black fruit flavours, cedar and spice.

A long, expressive and lush finish
Offers a stunning, deep, polished mix of strawberry, raspberry and chocolate liqueur notes, with accents of dark chocolate–covered espresso bean, sage, rosemary, cedar and palo santo. The tannins are fine-grained and velvety, with a long, expressive and lush finish. Cabernet and Shiraz. Drink now through 2038.

It flows beautifully
A warm dry year, which was particularly highly regarded in Coonawarra. Frost, hail, and wind around flowering slashed yields in the Barossa, producing intensely concentrated Shiraz, with structured tannins. The grapes were harvested between February 22 and April9, 2019. 77% Ming D Block Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, with 23% Barossa Shiraz from The Crown Village Schrapel Old Shiraz Block, Barossa Valley (19%), and Horseshoe Vineyard in Eden Valley (4%). 19 months in 24% new French barriques, balance in one-year and older French barriques. ABV 14%, TA 6.54g/l, pH 3.55, SO2 114mg/l. The Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon sings out joyously on both the nose and the perfumed palate, with soaring blackcurrant and mulberry, dried herbs, and a hint of classic Coonawarra mint, notes of which follow through in the mouth, together with blueberry and subtle iodine and kelp undertones. The Shiraz, relatively restrained, adds a twist of Eden Valley pepper mill, complementing the judicious oak spices(cedar, sandalwood, and nutmeg). Lithe and glossy in the mouth, it flows beautifully yet has the firm backbone of tannin to go the distance. 2024-40.

Magnificent
To be released on the first day of June. This is about 75% Coonawarra cabernet, a great backbone for this premium release. Louisa Rose offers, ‘the block is distinctive, the block has clay underpinning it, maybe keeping things fresher too. Just special, always’. Beautiful, gliding, compact, complex red wine. Savoury, fresh, brooding, mellow, guttural, minerally. Scents of aniseed, dark cherry, blackcurrants, green olive, mint, sandalwood, gingery spice, turned earth and salt bush. Wonderful perfume. Tannins are flexible, rivulets bolting through the plushness of medium to full fruit and spice flavour, glorious in extension and tightening with each sip. Feels youthful and huge in its potential. Magnificent.
