Tasting Note Perfumed aromas of violets, wild cherry, raspberry and pomegranate are interwoven with notes of white pepper and blood orange. The hallmark of this wine is 372 day post-ferment maceration which imparts incredibly silky texture and refinement to the palate, creating a textural wine with depth, structure, vibrant acidity and defined tannins. Stunning now, it will gradually evolve over the medium term.
Terroir This single vineyard Grenache has been crafted from grapes sourced from a two acre block in the Yalumba Tri-Centenary Vineyard. Located in the heart of the Barossa Valley, this block comprises 820 gnarly old bush vines that were planted in 1889. The vineyard features deep, sandy loam layers underlain with red-brown clay. With careful management, dry grown vines on these soils can consistently produce outstanding quality fruit.
Treatment After the Grenache grapes were hand-picked and fermented, the wine remained on skins post-fermentation for 333 days. This extended maturation contributes an even greater complexity and individuality to the wine.

Accolades

Complex and savory
So pure and refined, with real transparency to the fruit. Aromas of wild raspberries, citrus rind, porcini mushrooms, dried herbs and dried strawberries. The palate is tightly wound, with fine-tuned tannins and bright acidity that lead to a juicy and rounded mouthfeel. Complex and savory, with a bright and perfumed red fruited profile. Left on the skins for 330 days. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

An extraordinary, distinctively original wine
The genius of winemaker Kevin Glastonbury’s bold experimentation with ancient bush-vine Grenache (planted in 1889) is paying maximum dividends in this superior vintage expression. The bravery to pursue 333-day maceration on skins after fermentation in open-top stainless steel tanks enables the most pure fruit expression, while maintaining an especially lean palate line. A pale crimson hue belies its lively aromas and flavours, so fragile they lean towards the ethereal. The extended skin contact draws out sublime nuances of wild raspberry, pulled taut by super-fine tannins. An extraordinary, distinctively original wine. Capturing this under screwcap will ensure its vitality and nervy energy is preserved for a decade in the cellar.

Composed, energetic, spicy, red-fruited
Grenache sourced from Yalumba's resources of gnarled old bush vines. The colour is light and ruby-esque, hinting towards the wine's shape and form. There's a buoyancy to the aromatic profile. Redcurrant, raspberry and light red cherry fruits with hints of spice, twiggy bits, ginger cake, crushed stone, pressed wildflowers, charcuterie and earth. Ditto on the palate, which is spacious and flighty, different complexing characters flitting in and out of view; acidity bright and febrile with a composed, energetic, spicy, red-fruited mist marking its passage.

An attractive light red
Quite a pale ruby colour tinged with purple; the aromas are fresh and sweetly jubey, like raspberry jelly confectionery laced with gentle spice and dried-herb notes. It's light bodied and softly textured with fine, melting tannins and moderate length, ending in a slight grip. An attractive light red which would go well with lighter meats and stronger poultry dishes. It would appeal to pinot noir lovers.

This is a juicy style of Grenache
This may not have been the first wine to reveal the glories of Barossa Grenache, if treated with the respect it deserves, but it was certainly one of the early examples and always impresses. This wine spent an extraordinary 333 days on skins as a post-ferment maceration. The fruit comes from just 820 old bush vines which were planted back in 1889. Just 4,839 bottles made. A very pale crimson hue here, but one which is gleaming. The nose is all strawberries, cherries, dried herbs and truffles, with hints of smoked meats. The wine is bright, fresh, exhibiting vibrant acidity, a silky texture with satiny tannins and a lingering finish. This is a juicy style of Grenache, ideal for those who find the big reds of the Barossa a bit much for them (no, I don’t understand that either). A fifteen year proposition, though already delicious.

A tasty, harmonious drop
As the vibrant cherry shade hints at from first pour, this Barossa Grenache—from over 130 year old vines—pops with bright red berry aromas underpinned by spicier, more herbal tones reminiscent of cocktail bitters. It's lightweight with a slippery texture and more primary red fruit and spice on the palate. It's a tasty, harmonious drop but it feels more cheerfully straightforward than the serious label and price tag implies.

A wine with history and prestige

In our Old Vine Charter, a Tri-Centenary vine is classified as a vine whose life has spanned at least three centuries. The Tri-Centenary Grenache is made with Tri-Centenary bush vines that were planted in 1889. For the past 130 years, these rare vines, now crooked and gnarly, give up small quantities of exceptional grapes that we craft into this memorable wine.
